Citation Rate

Siteringsrate

Citation rate is the share of relevant AI search queries in which a specific brand, website, or source is mentioned or cited in the AI model's answer. It is a core KPI for AI visibility and is calculated as: (number of answers with a mention) / (total prompts run) × 100.

Citation rate has emerged as a central KPI for AI visibility. Where traditional SEO uses search ranking (position 1–10) as its success metric, AEO uses citation rate to quantify presence in AI-generated answers.

A citation rate of 0 percent means the AI model never mentions your brand on relevant questions. A rate of 100 percent means you are mentioned in every relevant answer. In practice, most businesses land between 5 and 40 percent, depending on industry and competition.

Citation rate should be segmented by AI model (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity), by prompt category (informational, product, comparison), and by geography. A business can have a high citation rate in ChatGPT but a low one in Gemini.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good citation rate?
There's no universal benchmark yet, as the field is young. As a rough guide: under 10 percent is weak visibility, 10–30 percent is average, and above 30 percent is strong for most B2B niches. Dedicated AI visibility tools provide industry benchmarks.
How do you increase citation rate?
Increase citation rate by building topical authority, publishing structured content that answers questions precisely in your industry, earning mentions in high-authority publications, and implementing correct schema markup on your web pages.
